Sound artists Yifeat Ziv and Daniel Meir create a hybrid sonorous space that blurs the boundaries between human and non-human. The work, created for the exhibition Overtones: Sound and Art, is called Oddkin – a concept coined by philosopher Donna Haraway. It offers an odd sense of kinship between human beings and trees, animals, and whatever is beyond the human. This kinship is not based on biogenetic ties but rather on choice, attention, and responsibility.
In their first joint work, the artists return to listening experiences in various natural environments through memory and an attempt at musical, technological, and physical recreation. They record naturally occurring sounds, harmonies, and rhythms and then rework them, adding the human voice and electronic musical instruments. The distance between the raw material – the recordings – and the resulting work reveals the tension between the desire to connect and the limitations of the human voice and sense of hearing.
